Tulare County is an agriculturally-based county located in California's San Joaquin Valley. The county's name derives from Tulare Lake, a since-drained body of water named after the Spanish phrase for the grass-like reeds which were found nearby, "Los Tules". Jurisdictionally, it was formed from parts of Mariposa County in 1852. But over the second half of the 19th century, portions of the county were then given to Fresno County (1856), Kern County (1866), Inyo County (1866) and Kings County (1893).

The county has eight incorporated cities, with the City of Visalia as the county seat:
