Butte County is located 66 miles north of Sacramento in the Northern Sacramento Valley and is the most populous county north of the state capital. The county lies along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, the steep slopes make Butte County prime territory for hydroelectric power plants. Butte County is also the site of Feather Falls, the sixth largest waterfall in the United States.

Butte County has five incorporated cities, with the City of Oroville as its county seat:
