GREAT
VALLEY CENTER GRANTS ALMOST $700,000 TO
77 CENTRAL VALLEY ORGANIZATIONS
Great Valley Center grants to Central
Valley residents top $3.5 million for the
first time
MODESTO, California - June 1, 2002
- Seventy-eight nonprofit groups with projects
from Bakersfield to Redding are sharing
nearly $700,000 in spring cycle awards from
the Great Valley Center’s 2002 LEGACI
grants program. Another $350,000 will be
awarded to fall applicants.
The Modesto-based nonprofit has awarded
$3.5 million in grants over the past five
years to support 350 programs and projects
throughout the Central Valley. Ranging in
size from $800 to $30,000, the LEGACI grants
support a variety of efforts, including
after-school programs for youth, farmland
and habitat conservation, assistance for
developing nonprofits and small businesses,
and planning for surging growth in the Central
Valley.
“This was the strongest group of applications
to date,” said Mike Chrisman, Great
Valley Center board chairman. “We
were especially heartened to see so many
fine proposals for youth development, a
new focus in our expanded grants program.”
The Center lists the 2002 spring grants
and provides applications for the fall cycle
online at www.greatvalley.org. LEGACI is
an acronym representing a focus on Land
Use, Economic Development, Growth, Agriculture,
and Community Investment.
The Great Valley Center supports organizations
and activities that promote the economic,
social, and environmental well being of
the Central Valley. The LEGACI program is
supported by The James Irvine Foundation,
the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation,
the David and Lucile Packard Foundation,
and the Walter S. Johnson Foundation.
