ELEMENTARY

Centennial STARS
The mission of the STARS program is to help children read—pure and simple. The STARS program will engage fourth- through sixth-grade students and their parents by providing quality, in-depth literacy tutoring for children and encouraging parents to become more involved in their child’s education, by way of individual and small group meetings and workshops.  Partnering in the project is the Fresno Covenant Foundation.

Read to Succeed
This grant will provide a reading lab to struggling students and will provide a safe, engaging environment where they can improve their fluency and comprehension.  The Reading Lab will be available to students to meet with the Reading Resource teacher for 30-minute group sessions each day.  The sessions will run for eight weeks with assessment following each session.  Students who move out of the program will be monitored throughout the school year to ensure they are continuing to make adequate progress and do not fall behind as school work becomes increasingly difficult.

Elementary Math for Parents and Students
The purpose of this program is to assist students in learning and to provide encouragement.  Struggling students will gain a firm foundation in math by receiving instruction in problem areas from the entire family.  Algebraic expressions, variables, sequencing, and logical reasoning are all problematic areas for students with a lower aptitude for success in math.  One night each month will be devoted to family math, including a barbecue, to make math a positive learning experience for both parents and students.

The Voice of an Emerging Generation
In this project, students will work in groups to research a topic in history centered around the National History Day theme: Triumph and Tragedy in History.  After selecting a topic, students will begin researching information using primary and secondary sources found on the internet and in the library.  The students will also select a minimum of two people to interview.  The project will culminate with a newscast incorporating the research and interviews.

Homework Central
By offering classroom teachers and parents an alternative to after school homework where frustration and failure may exist, Homework Central will work hand-in-hand to offer after school assistance and interventions with behavior, study skills, academics, and a positive learning environment. The program will include a snack upon arrival, a quiet environment, assistance by qualified tutors, on-going literacy centers, creative projects, and computer labs.

See It, Touch It, Own It
Basic to a third-grade program is a full understanding of place value.  Activities in this program will include constructing, reading, and writing numbers to the millions place, and being able to recognize and write numbers in expanded and written form.  A place value chart showing all three forms will be utilized daily to reinforce these concepts.  This chart could be used in the math center with each child making use of this activity.  Word problems, clock activities, and paper money and coins will be used to enhance the students’ knowledge and understanding of these concepts.

Parents Are Teachers Too!
The PATT program has been created in response to the student assignment to read at least 20 minutes a day, yet many do not have the appropriate books at home.  PATT allows parents to check out books with CDs or tapes from the school to take home and read with their children.  Parents can take advantage of these books accompanied with CDs or tapes in order to learn English, benefitting not only children, but parents as well.

SENIOR HIGH
Artistic Business Entrepreneurs
While participating in this project, students will embark on new business ventures.  They will learn to design a t-shirt on the computer and take inventory of supplies.  Using a spreadsheet, students will figure out approximate quantities and costs of creating each shirt, set a reasonable price, and create a price chart based on material used.  Students will learn how to advertise their new business, targeting on-campus classes, clubs, and sport teams.
