Teams of VISTAs are individually placed at key public technology providers (called "project site") in the community like youth centers, libraries and job training centers to help improve their technology services and coordinate with similar programs. Each VISTA is assigned to assess technology opportunities, train volunteers to teach others in basic computer and Internet skills, conduct public outreach to use the technology, and organize related projects that are unique to the host organization. During the project year, the outreach and sessions are conducted in both English and Spanish.

AmeriCorps*VISTA members do not perform direct service; they don't directly tutor children, or build homes, or feed the hungry. Instead they help create or expand community-based programs, services, and systems that help individuals in poor communities improve their lives for the long term.
