Michael B. Teitz is Director of the Economy Program and Senior Fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California, and Emeritus Professor of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught from 1963 to 1998. He holds a B.Sc. (Econ.) from the London School of Economics, an M.S. in Geography from the University of Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. in Regional Science from the University of Pennsylvania. His research during recent years has been mainly in the fields of regional planning, local economic development, and housing planning and policy, in addition to which he has been examining the field of planning, its evolution and prospects. Author of a book on residential rent control and numerous papers and reports, he has also served as a consultant and advisor to local, state, and national governments in the U.S. and, internationally, to governments and private sector and non-profit organizations. He helped plan and establish the Public Policy Institute of California in its initial years and served as its Director of Research from 1998 to 2002. Among the leadership positions he has held are Chair of the Department of City and Regional Planning, Chair of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate of the University of California, and President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning. Among his awards are the Berkeley Citation, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Distinguished Educator Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning.
