Biography : Hugo Morales

Radio Bilingüe, Inc.

Hugo Morales is the Executive Director of Radio Bilingüe, Inc., the national Latino public radio network. In 1976, Mr. Morales and an all-volunteer staff of farmworkers, former farmworkers, and artists founded Radio Bilingüe in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Radio Bilingüe has grown to five full-power stations in California and a network of about 60 affiliates in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and northern Mexico.

Mr. Morales is a Mixtec Indian from Oaxaca, Mexico, whose family immigrated to California when he was nine. He grew up as a farmworker until he graduated from high school, and then went on to graduate from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. In 1994, he became the first resident of the San Joaquin Valley to be a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. In 1998, the Association of Mexican-American Educators honored Mr. Morales with its highest honor - The Cesar Chavez Leadership award. In May 1999, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting honored Mr. Morales with the Murrow Award, public radio’s highest distinction
