Did you know Stanislaus County is an island?

We didn't either, but some of our county supervisors seem to think so -- or at least that's the impression they give by their isolationist attitude toward regional planning.

Efforts to control sprawl in the San Joaquin Valley could get a boost from a bill now awaiting Gov. Schwarzenegger's signature.

On June 26, Modesto citizens were offered a workshop to develop a "blueprint for the valley's future," as part of the Stanislaus Council of Governments long-range planning effort for the county. The meeting was widely advertised and preceded by an article in The Bee ("Help develop blueprint for the valley's future") urging resident participation in the planning process.

A couple of weeks ago, a meeting announcement ran in The Sentinel inviting the public to join the Kings County Association of Governments in strategic planning sessions for Kings County 2050. The "growth roadmap" being put together is expected to guide future growth scenarios in the county through the next 40 years, when the population of the Central Valley is expected to double, if not triple.
