MODESTO- Eight Central Valley councils of governments will share $2 million over a two-year period to develop a valley-wide "vision" of land use and transportation decisions to guide growth in California's fastest growing region over the next 20 years.

The grant, which includes $500,000 in matching funds from the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, will be administered by the councils of government in each county, including San Joaquin, Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, Stanislaus, and Tulare.

The nonprofit Great Valley Center in Modesto will coordinate the effort into a regional, valley-wide context, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.

The process is intended to help Central Valley counties plan for future growth through the integration of transportation, housing, land use, economic development, and environmental protection.
