The Great Valley Center facilitated the possible
creation of a new research institute in California's
San Joaquin Valley. The focus of the institute
will
be on the application of informatics (computing,
communications, and mathematics) to the agriculture
and food processing industries.

The idea for this institute emerged from San Joaquin
Valley ACCESS, a Great Valley Center project that
brought together leaders from throughout the San
Joaquin Valley to increase access to high-speed
communications services. One realization from the
workshops was that although agriculture and food
processing compromise the largest economic sector
in the region, their use of information and communications
technologies lags that of other sectors.
Potential goals for the institute include:
- Support agri-businesses and agriculture technology
companies in their use of computing and communications
technologies to become more competitive.
- Help resolve agriculture related natural
resources issues, including land use, water,
and air quality.
- Raise the reputation of the San Joaquin Valley
as a center for innovation in agriculture and
food processing.
- Create new sources of jobs by spinning off
technology and graduates to start ups.
